Benefits
Decreases capital equipment costs
Full system modularity. The Traditional I/O
subsystem was designed with your investment in mind. All components are fully modular and may be installable under power.
1 You add I/O interface carriers and I/O
interfaces in groups of 4, 8, 16, or 32 channels as you need them. The modular design enables you to purchase the exact amount of I/O cards, 8-wide carriers, power/controllers, and 2-wide carriers you need and add more DeltaV I/O as your system grows.
Reduced system footprint. The DeltaV system’s
state-of-the-art form factor design of the I/O components enables you to mount the I/O interface carrier in a junction box in the field so you significantly reduce the footprint of your equipment and increase valuable control room space for other uses.
Installation. Save on wiring expenses by installing
Classic Instrumentation in the field, near the actual field devices. Mounting the controller with the I/O further reduces your wiring expenditures by eliminating the need for long runs of multi-cores. The integrated design of the Traditional I/O subsystem can eliminate the need for marshaling panels. This saves you even more in your total capital costs.
The provision of in-line fuses and bussed power saves on installation costs compared with external fuses and power distribution.
Decreases installation time and expense
Plug-and-play installation saves money. All
Traditional I/O components plug into the I/O interface carrier. You can install the I/O interface carriers to manage anticipated growth and postpone the I/O interfaces until you’re ready to install your additional field devices.
Phased installation saves time. As soon as you
mount the I/O interface carrier, you’re ready to begin installing the field devices. I/O terminal blocks plug directly onto the I/O interface carrier. There is no need to have the I/O cards installed.
1 Refer to Zone 2 installation instructions (12P2046) and/or
Class 1 Division 2 installation instructions (12P1293) for details.
Traditional I/O terminal block.
Keys. Traditional I/O interfaces and terminal blocks have
I/O function keys. These keys ensure that the correct I/O card is always plugged into the corresponding terminal block. It’s incredibly easy to use and gives you time to do more.
This design enables you to initially install Traditional I/O quickly and efficiently. When you need to replace an I/O card, the function key design ensures that you will always install it correctly. This keying system provides a safety measure by preventing the wrong I/O interface’s being installed.
Increases productivity
Real-time, online equipment additions. Online
addition of new I/O interfaces means your process does not get interrupted. As new equipment is added, the DeltaV Explorer acknowledges it and assigns it basic configuration.
Increases process availability
1:1 Redundancy for Traditional and HART I/O cards. DeltaV redundant I/O uses the same Series 2 I/O
cards as non-redundant I/O. This allows you to leverage your investment in installed I/O and in I/O spares. No additional configuration is needed when using a redundant channel. The redundant terminal blocks provide the same field wiring connections as simplex blocks, so there is no extra wiring needed.
DeltaV Product Data Sheet
March 2010 – Page 3 M-series Traditional I/O
Autosense of redundancy. DeltaV autosenses
redundant I/O, which greatly simplifies the task of adding redundancy to the system. The redundant pair of cards is treated as one card in the system tools.
Automatic Switchover. Should a primary I/O card fail,
the system automatically switches to the "standby" card without user intervention. The operator is given clear notification of a switchover at the operator display
Product Description

DO, High Density, 32-channels
DO 24 VDC Isolated, 8-channels
DO 120/230 VAC High Side, 8 channels
DO 120/230 Isolated, 8 channels
All I/O cards are enclosed in a common form factor that plugs into the I/O interface carrier. The housing is clearly labeled with the enclosed I/O card type. All cards have power and internal error indicators. Eight channel cards have clearly visible channel status LEDs.
All cards meet ISA G3 corrosion specifications by the careful selection of superior electronic components and the use of conformal coating.
Pulse Counters are available on most DI cards. The supported maximum frequency varies from 0.1 Hz on AC signals to 75 or 120 Hz on 24 VDC inputs. For higher pulse counts up to 50 KHz, use the Multi-Function card’s high speed pulse input.
DeltaV provides control module level time stamping for log events and alarms. For greater event resolution the 16 channel Sequence of Events DI card can provide signal driven events to a resolution of +/- 0.25 ms per card, or within 1 ms per controller. Please refer to the Sequence of Events PDS for more information on Sequence of Event data collection and system options for this feature.

I/O Card Redundancy
Redundant I/O cards are available for critical applications. The same card can be used in simplex or redundant applications. When installed on a two-wide redundant terminal block, the cards are recognized as a redundant pair by the controller. The controller scans each card and determines which card is acting as the active interface. When a fault is detected, the system automatically switches to the standby I/O card.
DeltaV Control modules reference simplex and redundant I/O channels identically and there is no special configuration required to take advantage of redundancy.
Switchover of a redundant I/O card is completed within two scans of the I/O bus. Make-before-break contacts ensure digital field instruments remain powered and the process is undisturbed. Analog output signals are briefly driven by both cards for < 5 ms during switchover of the card.
Hardware Alerts automatically report hardware integrity errors for both the primary and secondary cards. Any event that causes a switchover is also reported automatically through the system hardware alerts and is logged in the Event Chronicle.
Events that can cause a switchover include.
Hardware failure within the active card.
Communications failure between the active card and the controller.
Removal of the active card from the carrier.
Detection of a fault in the field wiring
A switchover may also be initiated from the diagnostics
explorer, and the health and status of both cards and their
channels are available in the diagnostics explorer.
The system automatically commissions a new standby
card. In safe areas, failed cards can be replaced under
power. In hazardous areas, appropriate installation
procedures must be followed.

I/O Terminal Blocks
A variety of I/O terminal blocks are available to meet specific functionality and environmental requirements of the installation. The I/O interface is a combination of the I/O card and the I/O terminal block. Each I/O interface is uniquely keyed so that once installed in a carrier slot with a terminal block, that terminal block will only accept a replacement card.
8 channel standard Terminal block
The keying mechanism consists of two keying posts that rotate and lock into the terminal block base. Each post has 6 positions: A-F and 1-6. Each card is assigned a unique key which is marked on the side of the I/O card:
Terminal Block keying example
The keys prevent installation of an incorrect card, and the graphical information on the card makes it easy to determine if a keyed slot will accept a particular card.
There are 8 different I/O terminal blocks available to meet the wiring needs of field signals.

Introduction
DeltaV software runs on a limited variety of Dell Intel-based computers. Available using workstation hardware with single, dual
or quad monitors or using
server hardware with a single monitor, the selection of DeltaV workstation hardware provides the performance you need to engineer your control strategy and operate your process.
DeltaV workstations run on a specific set of preselected Dell computer hardware specifically chosen to provide the best cost performance solution
for your DeltaV system. We provide you with a guaranteed solution to deliver the performance required.
We have pre-tested DeltaV with both the hardware configuration and the operating system configuration so you can be sure that DeltaV will always operate correctly. You will never be bothered with incompatible drivers, bad or overwritten DLLs, or substandard hardware. You will not waste time in no-value system setup engineering and troubleshooting. Instead, you can focus on your process control functions.
DeltaV Product Data Sheet January 2011 – Page 2 DeltaV Workstation Hardware
Benefits
Pre-installed software. When ordered through a
DeltaV system integrator who can pre-load the correct DeltaV software version, the pre-loaded workstation, monitor, keyboard, and mouse are delivered ready to plug and play in your DeltaV system. This is hassle-free hardware delivery. No third-party interfaces, compatibility problems, nor software versions to worry you. A trouble-free system is guaranteed.
Easy control network installation. The workstation
ships from the factory with the appropriate DeltaV control network cards preinstalled—no cases to open or network drivers to set up. Just plug a control network segment into the workstation and the other end into the DeltaV control area network (CAN), and you’ve just set up a new DeltaV network node.
Choose between PCs and servers to optimize your cost/performance. Some systems are served well
with PC workstations. But when larger systems demand higher levels of performance, the servers provide exactly what you need.
Flexible options. Match our options with your
requirements for towers, servers, dual monitors and RAID storage. We provide recommendations, but the choice is yours. Either way, the operating system is pre-loaded and ready to roll.
Product Description
The workstation hardware described in this document is subject to improvements at any time. It is the policy of Emerson Process Management to ship workstation hardware that is current with industry standards.
We want you to enjoy the benefits of the increasing performance and decreasing costs inherent with using state-of-the-art, off-the-shelf equipment as much as possible. DeltaV performs testing to help eliminate the risks associated with new platforms, and we continue to focus on measures that extend the life of installed hardware.
Workstation Hardware
Plenty of horsepower. All workstations use state-of-
the-art processors well suited to provide the performance required for DeltaV software.
Lots of memory. All computers come with sufficient
memory to handle DeltaV applications.
Secure data and fast recovery from hard drive failures. Workstations with RAID1 drives provide
higher availability and fast recovery from failures. Servers in RAID 10 configurations maximize data protection and help enhance the performance of the server.
Crystal clear video. DeltaV software works at 1024 x
768, 1280x1024 or 1680x1050 [wide screen] pixel resolution (DeltaV v10.3 and later only). [Please see monitors section for details]. You can increase your viewing space with dual monitors or quad monitors. [servers do not support wide screen]
Alarm Annunciation. Audible alarms use the on-
board sound cards included on the motherboards of all operator workstations. (Sound is not available on server-class computers.)
Legendary support. Emerson Process Management
consistently receives top honors in service from our customers (ref.: Control magazine January 1998 to January 2009). This service is extended with a variety of optional support plans. When you subscribe to one of these plans, you are supplied with an external modem. This modem enables the factory to perform remote diagnostics on your workstation should the need arise.
Communications redundancy. The DeltaV
system is solid, secure, and safe. The DeltaV control network is fully redundant, and the workstations are equipped to take advantage of this redundancy.
System Backups- The internally installed backup
unit (server tower only) make backups a breeze. It is standard with the server. All workstations now come with a DVD-RW drive.
Monitor Options- Choose standard or widescreen
flat panel monitors to display your process graphics. Choose dual or quad monitors for maximum viewing area.
DeltaV Product Data Sheet January 2011 – Page 3 DeltaV Workstation Hardware
Monitor Specifications
Due to potential incompatibilities between the supported video cards and other monitors we are not able provide product support if monitors other than those specified below are used
The DeltaV system supports the Dell Professional P2210 22-inch Widescreen Flat Panel Monitor with a 16:10 aspect ratio in a 1680x1050 resolution in DeltaV 10.3 or newer systems. [DeltaV does not support 16:9 aspect ratio monitors]
Wide screen monitors are supported on all DeltaV Workstations except server class computers. Server class computers only support 4:3 aspect ratio monitors. A wide screen monitor can be used on a server but will only display in a 4:3 aspect ratio. Wide screen monitors must be connected to the computer prior to making wide screen resolution selections.
The DeltaV system also supports the Dell 20" 2007FP (4:3 aspect ratio) on workstations and servers.
We also support the following NEC monitors:
VE2801 - NEC MultiSync LCD2090UXi-BK 20 in Black Flat Panel LCD Monitor
VE2802 - NEC MultiSync LCD2090UXi-BK 20 in Black Flat Panel LCD Monitor with Capacitive Touch.
(Please see the Touchscreen product data sheet for details on touch screen technology. Wide screen touch screen currently not available from Emerson.)
Monitor physical appearances change periodically and without notice from monitor suppliers. We cannot guarantee that physically compatible monitors will be available at all times. If you require that any spare or replacement monitors be physically compatible with installed monitors, then spare or replacement monitors must all be ordered at the same time the initial workstation is ordered.
Specifications Common to all Computers (applies to all computers with exceptions noted under computer specifications)
Except as noted in the specific computer section all computers are compatible only with DeltaV v7.4.2, or newer systems. There are no new computers available to support 7.1-7.4.1 DeltaV systems – Please refer to the Emerson Process Management Product Support Guidelines for complete details on available DeltaV Workstation hardware and software support. Consult our local Emerson support office or Representative or visit us at www.SureService.com).
All computers must be installed in a dust-free, contaminant-free environment. These computers are not suitable for mounting in industrial environments unless they are mounted in enclosures that provide the necessary dust-free and contaminant-free environment. Environment must meet Class G1 level for airborne contaminants per the ISA standard ISA–71.04–1985, Environmental Conditions for Process Measurement and Control Systems: Airborne Contaminants.
It is the responsibility of the user to insure their environment is compatible with G1. Due to compliance to RoHS requirements newer computers may not survive in the same environment as older models. If there is any chance of sulfur in the environment computers must be protected in environmental enclosures or relocated to a sulfur free environment.

The VE2537 and SE2503 come complete with all components below (except network cable)
Installation Note:
If the rack mounted workstation is installed within 100m of the monitor/mouse/keyboard, then using dedicated point to
point Ethernet-wired connections between the PC and FX100 is required..
If distance is longer than 100m, then dedicated point to point fiber connections using media converters are required to
extend length.
The use of patch panels as part of the wiring between the PC and FX100 is strongly discouraged due to possible
network issues introduced using these devices. Dedicated wiring runs a strongly recommended for FX100
connections.
We only support dedicated point to point connections from the PC to the FX100 device. If a switched network solution
will be used between multiple workstations and remote FX100 devices, then Ethernet network planning and design will
be required for a successful implementation. Consult Emerson Process Management SureService to obtain a quotation
for assistance with this network planning.

A note about workstation network connections on computers used as operator workstations:
The VE2544, VE2539 and VE3541 have three network interface connections (NIC) included in the default hardware configuration. Two are used to connect to the DeltaV primary and secondary control networks. The additional NIC is included as a convenience (so it does not have to be field installed) for use in connecting to an external printer network or other closed, self-contained network if desired.
For cyber security reasons on a computer that is used as an operator workstation we recommend that the third NIC should not be used to connect this workstation to a plant or Enterprise LAN. External network connections should be maintained on as few DeltaV workstations as possible and only Application or ProfessionalPlus workstations should be used for making connections to an external network.
Use of KVM (Keyboard, Video and Mouse) extenders and switches on DeltaV Workstations
Only the specific KVM products listed in the Alliance program data sheet are supported with DeltaV. If you have customer requirements for a KVM extender or switch that cannot be met by these KVM solutions you must submit an engineering request for a supported solution. Please note the video card information on the workstation computers listed below as the video outputs of the cards have changed and special adaptors must be used [that may not be supplied] or new KVM equipment may have to be obtained to use these computers in existing systems where KVMs are installed. Specifically these computers no longer have VGA outputs and the use of VGA adaptors may not be supported by existing KVM devices

Ordering Information
Ordering numbers (VE and SE numbers) are listed in the sections above. These specifications are subject to change
without notice. We guarantee that the computers sold for use with the DeltaV system will provide performance and storage
space needed to support DeltaV solutions. We do not guarantee that the hardware specifications of the computers will
remain unchanged during the sales life of a specific DeltaV VE number.
Note: The DeltaV system is supported only on the specific Dell computer configurations specified in this document and
sold from our pricebook. The DeltaV system is not supported on other Dell computers or computer configurations or on
non-Dell computers unless specifically noted otherwise. Any use of non-supported computers will affect our ability to
provide technical support and will involve additional costs for technical support.
To order the computers in this document with specifications different than those listed requires a customer special
configuration to be quoted by Emerson. Changing computer specification requires testing the new configuration for
compatibility with DeltaV software.
Note about modifying DeltaV Workstation Hardware configurations
DeltaV workstations are delivered with sufficient memory, hard drives and network interface cards and other hardware to
support all DeltaV applications. No additional hardware changes are required to support DeltaV applications and standard
installations. As such we do not support the field installation of additional memory, additional hard drives, added NIC cards
or other field implemented hardware modifications without consultation with Emerson. Failure to consult with Emerson on
any hardware modifications may result in poor DeltaV performance and make it difficult to provide technical support for
those workstations that have been modified.

The MX Controller provides communication and control between the field devices and the other nodes on the control network. Control strategies and system configurations created on earlier DeltaV systems can be used with this powerful controller. The MX Controller provides all the features and functions of the MD Plus Controller, with twice the capacity.
The control languages executed in the controllers are described in the Control Software Suite product data sheet.

Benefits
Right-sized controllers
The MX controller complements the existing MD/MD Plus controllers by providing a larger-capacity controller for those applications that need more control capacity:
2X the control capacity
2X user-configurable memory
2X the DST count
Late changes. You can easily upgrade an MD/MD Plus
controller to an MX to handle project scope changes late in the project. The MX installs in the same footprint as the MD/MD Plus Controllers but delivers twice the performance. Simply replace the MD/MD Plus with the MX and all existing configuration, documentation and hardware design remain the same — forgiving.
Redundant architecture. The MX controller supports
1:1 redundancy for increased availability. Existing MD/MD Plus controllers can be upgraded online — robust!
Increases productivity
Self-addressing. The DeltaV controller is unique in its
ability to automatically identify itself to the DeltaV control network. When the controller is powered up, it is automatically assigned a unique address—no dip switches, no configuring—just plug and play!
Self-locating. A controller’s physical location is easy to
find. LEDs on the face of the controller can be made to flash, providing a strong visual clue.
Automatic I/O detection. The controller can identify all
I/O interface channels located on the subsystem. As soon as an I/O interface is plugged in, the controller knows the general characteristics of the field devices managed by that I/O interface. This reduces the no value engineering associated with configuration — easy!
Easy to use
Powerful control. The DeltaV controllers manage all
control activities for the I/O interface channels as well as all the communication functions to the area control network. Continuous control function block diagrams, sequential function charts and phase logic provide powerful control structures that are further augmented by user-defined structured text algorithms. Time stamping for alarms and events is performed in the controller for accurate sequence of event recording. The controller executes your control strategy as fast as every 100 ms, and can communicate up to 4000 exception values per second.
Data protection. All online changes made to control
parameters are automatically stored for later upload into the engineering database. This way, the system always retains a complete record of all the data that has been changed online.
Cold restart. This feature provides automatic restart of
the controller in case of a power failure. The restart is completely autonomous because the entire control strategy is stored in NVM RAM of the controller for this purpose. Simply set the restart state of the controller to current conditions.
The MX Controller
Note: Use an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) to
prevent any disruption of control on critical processes.
Has the flexibility to meet your needs
Advanced operations. The MX Controller is equipped
to handle the DeltaV Batch option, as well as advanced control functions.
The MX controller uses the same I/O subsystem as the MD Plus Controller, but provides more CPU and memory capacity. It is primarily intended to allow the configuration of a large unit in a single controller node, where previously two MD Plus Controllers were required, due to CPU, memory or DST constraints, to be consolidated into a single controller.
You can also use advanced control functions such as Neural and Model Predictive Control on the MX controller.

Data pass-through. The controller is equipped with the
ability to pass smart HART information from field devices to any workstation node in the control network. This means you can take advantage of applications, such as Asset Management Solutions, that enable you to remotely manage the HART information contained in your HART or FOUNDATION fieldbus-equipped devices.
Prepares you for the future. As your system grows,
you can expand your software license to increase the number of device signal tags (DSTs) allocated to the DeltaV controller. Begin with 50 and expand to 1500 DSTs. Control strategy complexity and control module scan rates determine overall controller performance and application size.
Mounting. This plug-and-play system structure provides
modular system growth from a single controller up to 100 controller nodes in a single DeltaV system. Each controller’s I/O subsystem can be expanded online and can be mounted in a Class 1, Div 2 or ATEX Zone II environment.

I/O Subsystem Carriers product data sheets for additional information.
Designed to support legacy migration
Advanced operations. The MX controller provides the
DeltaV platform to migrate even the largest of PROVOX SRX controllers, and also supports the PROVOX and RS3 Migration I/O interfaces.
The combined CPU capacity and DST count provides sufficient resources for our largest SRX controller configurations to be migrated on a one-for-one basis with DeltaV MX Controllers. The existing PROVOX I/O remains in place using the migration I/O interface to PROVOX with support of up to 1500 real I/O signals. Serial datasets are migrated to DeltaV serial cards and all virtual I/O are no longer required due to the direct module references possible in the DeltaV system.
RS3 system migrations to the DeltaV system were fully supported with MD Plus Controllers and the migration I/O interface for RS3. The MX controller can also be used in these projects as necessary.
